I run a private babysitting service. Do I need a blue card?
Yes. Your work as a private babysitter falls under the 'Child care services and similar employment' category of regulated business.
You can apply for a blue card by submitting a Blue card business application (BCB) form (PDF, 245KB) and selecting 'Child care (including education and care)' category.
Please note, as a business operator you must not commence child-related work until after you have received a blue card.
I sometimes care for my neighbour’s children – do I need a blue card?
If you are not earning any income and the arrangement is informal then it is likely this will be a ‘private arrangement’.
A private arrangement does not fall within the scope of the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 and you are therefore not required to hold a blue card.
A ‘private arrangement’ might also include:-
- providing a car pool service where you drive your own and other children to and from school,
- babysitting a relative such as a niece, nephew or younger cousin.
